Horses and Trees

Ginger Baker, 1986

There's been quite a cast of characters in Ginger Baker's life. There's the Cream gang (obviously), but the list is long enough to include afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and psychedelic space-rockers Hawkwind. This middle-80s LP finds him caught up in Bill Laswell's orbit, which means characters like Bernie Worrell (Parliament / Funkadelic), violinist Shankar (John McLaughlin's Shakti) and turntablist DST (from Herbie Hancock's Rockit band) are all in tow. The end result is not far from Material record from the same period, but Baker put his own stamp on the sound—plus, you've got to love that big, gated-reverb, 80s drum sound.
