Authentic Exoticism

Don't DJ, 2016

Maybe I haven't been reading my WIRE magazine faithfully enough, but I have to admit to not being completely up on all the latest electronica subgenres. I lost touch, around 2005 when the prevailing trends were dubstep and grime. Once you step out of the stream it's hard to get back in. You might call Authentic Exoticism a sort of footwork record, I suppose. Most of the footwork stuff I've heard is pretty harsh, though—and this has such a mellow (if still hyperactive) vibe to it. It's that very contradiction that attracted me to this EP, with it's dense, complicated rhythms creating patterns of easy-listening melodicism.
