The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw

Pelican, 2005

Though lumped in with the experimental metal scene, Pelican have little to do with the extremism of Sunn O))) & Co. On The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw they belie their Chicago roots by coming off like an extra-heavy version of Tortoise (making this post-metal, I suppose). Pelican was an early introduction to the new world of experimental-metal for me. Bypassing vocals, it allowed me to absorb the tunes on a purely musical level. Building up riff heavy instrumental tracks, leaning heavily on percussive guitar dynamics and minor-key chord constructions, they make a convincing argument for the form. This is a band I'd very much like to see live sometime—like all metal music, it just begs to be played loud.

The double LP version of this album comes in a stunning gatefold cover, printed on metallic foil.
