Singulacra

Sophia Loizou, 2016

While I am highly attuned to ambient drone records, Sophia Loizou's Singulacra caught my attention as something else. At it's nearly invisible heart, it is an old-school drum-n-bass record. It's as if she wrote for the genre then found a mile-long drainage pipe to play it through, only to record what came out the other end. Singulacra is the sound of songs echoing back in on themselves until they are nothing but giant, undulating tones overtaking the foreground. Every now and again, though, the clouds part to give you a shadowy glimpse where this fog of sound comes from, and it's those liminal moments that charge Singulacra with life.
